我会说中文

I've been studying Chinese for Loading.... To demonstrate my progress (and practice writing), I will occasionally write a short piece on this blog entirely in Chinese. Entries represent what I am able to express from memory without referencing any materials. Anyway, 我们写吧!

你好!我叫赛柔。我常常学习中文。它很漂亮。
两杯热茶,谢谢。火车站在那里?我的老婆喜欢去书店。

Resources

Some tips:
- With the exception of live tutoring, NEVER pay for a language-learning service. I promise you can do it just as well for free.
- Rosetta Stone sucks ass. Pimsleur is okay. Duolingo is fine but ignore EXP and Leaderboards. Just get your streak and move on.
- Don't burn yourself out. Take a break, eat a snack, go for a walk, mix up the activities. SLEEP.
- Watch YouTube or TV in your TL even if you can't understand a word. Your brain is acclimating to the rhythms and other intangibles of the language.

Brain ON (challenging)

  • Immersive Chinese: ~4000 sentences that gradually introduce new vocab and grammar concepts. High-quality audio. Effective and realistic difficulty ramp over time.
  • Immersi: Assesses your level and trawls the internet for videos that will be appropriately challenging. Mobile only.
  • HelloTalk: Chat with speakers of your TL and help others learn your native language. The app also offers a feature identical to Drops (see below).

Brain OFF (passive)

  • Daily Chinese: Modest but reliable spaced-repetition for vocab. Requires 5-10 minutes per day. Great supplement to any study regimen. Mobile only.
  • Drops: More spaced-repetition, hard cap at 5 minutes per day (for free). I can't tell yet if this is working - I'll report my findings.
